Meyer, Harding
Born 1964 Porto Alegre, lives and works in Pfinztal.
Untitled. Portrait of a young woman.
Oil on canvas. Verso on the canvas overlap signed and dated (19)99.
H 80,
In the 1990s, Harding Meyer painted portraits from his private surroundings. Later he began to search the mass media for new, unknown faces by leafing through magazines, filming the television programme with a video camera or taking screenshots on the computer. He utilised various image disturbances, such as the stripes of an unstable TV signal, the composite pixels of a computer image or creases in a magazine page artistically and transferred them into his painting. The portraits of these nameless people negate the usual idea of the portrait, namely recognisability. Rather, they become a mirror of our media society, since his main source of fresh, unused faces is now the internet.
