After his studies at the Königsberg academy in his subjects Carl Scherres often remained faithful to his East Prussian homeland. His works bear titles like «Calm Baltic Sea», «Moving Baltic Sea» or «Flooding in East Prussia» and often capture a special mood or weather condition. In 1867 he moved to Berlin, where he taught as a professor at the private «Damenakademie (ladies' academy)».
