Carl Spitzweg

5th February 1808 – 23th September 1885

Carl Spitzweg was born on 5th of February in 1808 in Unterpfaffenhofen, Bavaria. Although trained as a chemist, he discovered quite early his talent for drawing and his affinity with art. Spitzweg travelled extensively during his lifetime and the impressions formed by his travels greatly influenced his work. Shortly after completing his studies in pharmaceutics in 1832, he visited Italy. It was particularly in the cities of Florence, Rome, and Naples that he discovered the many significant works of Western culture which were to leave a permanent imprint on him.

A severe case of dysentery in 1833 strengthened his resolve to abandon his career as a chemist and he proceeded to commit himself solely to his painting. In June 1835, he became a member of the Munich Art Association and travelled that same year to southern Tirol with the landscape painter Eduard Schleich, the Elder.

In 1839 he completed his first painting entitled ''The Poor Poet'. Although this recurring motif would later be considered his most well-known body of work, the painting was not accepted at this time by the jury of the Munich Art Association.

As regards his graphic production, the first publication in 1844 of his own illustrations in the Munich weekly paper 'Fliegende Blätter' is considered quite significant. His visits to the Industrial Exposition in Paris and the World's Fair exhibition in London in 1851 were his first contact with the Oriental scenes which would begin to inform his work.

To the deserving painter were bestowed numerous honours during the second half of Spitzweg's lifetime: in 1865 the Bavarian Royal Merit Order of St. Michael was conferred upon him, and in 1875 he was named an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts.

Carl Spitzweg died on 23th of September in 1885 and was entombed in the historic South Cemetery in Munich.

He leaves behind a body of work dedicated to the townspeople who inhibit his genre scenes, and with acute and pointed, but never ill-natured humour he portrays the everday bourgeois life of his time.

Here Helmut Newton stages the model Nadja Auermann, at times known for the longest legs in the business, who was in worldwide demand in the 1990s. In an unclothed back view, wearing black high heels and gloves, she looks out over the Mediterranean Sea at the edge of the port of Monte-Carlo. Her head is not in the picture. Our gaze as observers is directed to her flawless body, which, like a classical statue in the contrapposto pose, turns dynamically and confidently towards the floods. The legs attract attention, with the engaged leg tied up in leather straps, erotically emphasizing the taut, muscular surface texture, while the more passive free leg is loosely clamped into an orthopaedic apparatus, an external fixator. Usually, this medical device is used to stabilize broken bones, penetrating the body through skin and flesh and enclosing the fractured area like a metal exoskeleton. A massive anchor chain almost seems to slip out of the model's right hand. It looks as if the anchor chain and the here not visible anchor, the ancient Christian symbol of hope, is being put to the test and has to prove itself against the fixator, the modern, progressive guarantor of recovery. But the search for security continues, our gaze slips into the endless and uncertain.
Helmut Newton would have been a hundred years old on 31. October 2020.

Helmut Newton inszeniert hier das in den 1990er Jahren weltweit gefragte Model Nadja Auermann, zeitweise bekannt für die längsten Beine der Branche, in unbekleideter Rückenansicht mit schwarzen High Heels und Handschuhen an der Hafenkante von Monte-Carlo, auf das Mittelmeer blickend. Ihr Kopf ist nicht mehr im Bild. Unser Blick als Betrachtende wird auf den makellosen Körper gelenkt, der sich wie eine klassische Statue im Kontrapost dynamisch und selbstbewusst den Fluten zuwendet. Dabei fallen die Beine auf, wobei das tragende Standbein in Lederriemen eingeschnürt ist, die straffe, muskulöse Oberflächentextur auf erotische Weise hervorhebend, während das passivere Spielbein lose in einen orthopädischen Apparat, einen Fixateur externe, eingezwängt wurde. Normalerweise dient dieses medizintechnische Gerät der Stabilisierung von Knochenbrüchen und durchdringt dabei den Körper durch Haut und Fleisch und umfasst die gebrochene Stelle wie ein metallenes Außenskelett. Eine massige Ankerkette scheint der rechten Hand des Modells fast zu entgleiten. Es wirkt so als stünde die Ankerkette und weiter assoziiert der Anker, das alte, christliche Symbol der Hoffnung, auf dem Prüfstand und muss sich gegen den Fixateur, den modernen, fortschrittlichen Garant auf Genesung, beweisen. Doch die Suche nach Sicherheit geht weiter, der Blick gleitet ins Endlose und Ungewisse.
Helmut Newton wäre am 31. Oktober 2020 einhundert Jahre alt geworden
