Schuster, Rudolf Heinrich
1848 Markneukirchen - 1902 ibid.
Evening rest with a covered wagon in an idealised landscape in front of Civitella.
Oil on canvas. Signed lower right and dated 1876.
H 51,5, W 78 cm (support). Elaborate frame.
Places like Olevano and Civitella in the Sabine Mountains became places of longing for the Italy-loving European painters of the 19th century since the Romantic period and the time of the Deutschrömer. Rudolf Schuster, who for a long time lived in Berlin and Dresden and who was regarded as THE painter of the central German uplands, pursued his education in study journeys across the Alps and created numerous ideal Italian landscapes.
Provenance: Christie's, Amsterdam, 28.10.1992, lot 152; Christie's, New York, 17.02.1994, lot 164; Auktionshaus Bernd Rieber, Stuttgart, March 1996, lot 996; since then private collection Achern.
