Sandreuter, Hans
1850 Basel - 1901 Riehen.
Self portrait. Oil on canvas. Monogrammed upper left and dated 1890 upper right. Restored.
Hans Sandreuter, today an unjustly forgotten pupil of Arnold Böcklin, was mainly active as landscape painter even if also depictions with symbolist motifs were enriching his oeuvre. In addition he created designs for furniture, wall panellings, stoves and other interior decor items and was also successful as decorative painter. The influence of Arnold Böcklin is clearly visible in numerous of his works, especially from the earlier creative period of his life. The present self portrait however shows his personal style, emancipated from his master.
Provenance: estate of the artist; private collection Basel.
Exhibition: Fin de Siècle in Basel - Hans Sandreuter 1850 - 1901, Kunstmuseum Basel, 2001/02, No. 33.
Literature: Kunstmuseum Basel, Fin de Siècle in Basel - Hans Sandreuter 1850 - 1901, Basel 2001, p. 54 (cf.).

deutsch 1850 Basel - 1901 Riehen.
Selbstbildnis. Öl auf Leinwand. O.l. monogr. und o.r. 1890 dat. Altrest. H. 54,4, B. 53,4 cm.
