H 100,
The large-format, imposing landscape painting captivates its viewer with the picturesque, promising charm of medieval-like, Mediterranean architecture. From a slight bird's-eye view, one looks down on the ochre-toned roofs of the old town of Roquebrune, a place of southern yearning, located just outside the gates of the Principality of Monaco, a centre of the glamorous world. At this point, the Provençal Maritime Alps drop steeply into the dark blue waters of the Mediterranean. Over the centuries, countless winding settlements have formed on the slopes and on rocky outcrops, from which one can catch spectacular views of the surrounding landscape everywhere. The Italian-born painter César Bonanomi, who worked primarily in France, captured the baroque bell tower of the Sainte-Marguerite church in this work, immortalizing the graphic grooved pattern of the interlocking roof tiles. The warm color palette and hazy horizon suggest the heavy, sultry weather of a hot summer evening.
