Spitzweg, Carl
1808 Munich - 1885 ibid.
Standing male nude, javelin thrower.
Circa
H 36,4,
«Spitzweg suggests the shadows of the figure on the ground. It is this optical independence, since the activated line follows the active gaze of the draughtsman, which now silhouettedly highlights the figure. Nevertheless, the volume of the body is preserved in every detail. [...] Spitzweg strives to refine the clarity of the anatomical structure. The increased alternation of impressions by means of filigree given miniature forms is preferred by the draughtsman Spitzweg. The linear sharpening of the typology and the resulting separation of this from the background foil is striking in the male nudes.» from: Siegfried Wichmann, Spitzweg, Die frühesten Spitzwegbilder, Reihe für vergleichende und angewandte Kunstgeschichte (R.f.v.u.a.K.), without number, Lipp Verlag Munich n.d., p. 17.
«Several nude drawings are known from Spitzweg's œuvre, some of them even bear the name of the person depicted. Most of these nude drawings were done between 1831 and 1835.» (Detlef Rosenberger, Oberostendorf, 01.06.2020).
