Icon «Praise of the Archangel Michael»
South Russia circa 1800. Egg tempera over chalk ground on panel. The Archangel Michael, holding the Veil of Veronica, surrounded by the four saints Modest, Blasius, Florus and Laurus. Verso carvings in Cyrillic letters.
H 31,
Icons of this type depict the Archangel Michael in the centre with one of the Arma Christi, in this case the Veil of Veronica. He is usually surrounded by seraphim or saints. The four saints worshipped here were mainly called upon to help with cattle breeding, an assumption confirmed by a Cyrillic inscription on the reverse.
