The Danish landscape painter is regarded as one of the leading artists of this genre around the turn of the century and was very popular for his extensive and atmospheric landscape depictions, which he presented with great success at the big art exhibitions in Berlin and at the Glaspalast in Munich. His work is clearly influenced by French Impressionism, his main interest was the combination of forest and river landscapes. Since the rediscovery of Scandinavian painting within the last decades of the 20th century Mønsteds paintings are winning increased interest of international collectors.

Der dänische Landschaftsmaler gilt als einer der bekanntesten Künstler dieses Genres um die Jahrhundertwende und war bereits vor 1900 auch in Deutschland berühmt für seine weitläufigen und atmosphärischen Kompositionen, die er mit großem Erfolg auf den großen Kunstausstellungen in Berlin und im Münchener Glaspalast präsentierte. Sein Werk ist deutlich vom französischen Impressionismus beeinflusst, sein Hauptinteresse galt dabei der Kombination von Wald- und Flusslandschaften. Seit der Wiederentdeckung der skandinavischen Malerei in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts rückten auch Mønsteds Bilder wieder stärker in den Blickpunkt des internationalen Sammlerinteresses.
