Professor Hermann Dischler

25th September 1866 – 20th March 1935

Hermann Dischler was born on the 25th of September in 1866 in Freiburg i.Br. He received his artistic training in the art school in Karlsruhe, he was student of Gustav Schönleber. Thereafter he was engaged as a painter in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald area.

1894, after he finished his studies, he built himself an artist’s workroom in Freiburg i.Br. At this time he went on a lot of trips and his trusty camera followed him everywhere. Five years later he started to number and comment his artworks, which he collected in 29 «Bildbüchern (books of pictures)».

In the winter months from 1905 to 1907 he stayed in the Todtnauer Hütte, where a lot of his oil studies arise.
The snowy winter landscapes became his typical theme and he called himself «Schneemoler (snowpainter)». 1917 he received his professorship by Grand Duke Friedrich II.

In 1927 he had an exhibition with artists like Curt Liebich, Julius Heffner, Wilhelm Nagel, Wilhelm Wickertsheimer a.o., they called themselves «Die Schwarzwälder (the Black Forests)». He died on the 20th of March in 1935 in Hinterzarten. Today his works are extremely appreciated because the snowy landscape present the untouched nature.

Gottesmutter Kasanskaja
Mother of God Kazanskaya. Russia 19th C. Egg tempera over linen, chalk and gold ground on panel. Mother of God in chest length after the motive of Kazan, leaning her head towards Child Jesus standing front-on giving a blessing. Signs of age, paint loss. Both reverse sponki missing.
H 50,5, W 40 cm.
A legend tells that in 1579 in Kazan Mother of God appeared to a girl in her dreams telling her to publicly announce where to find her miraculous icon. When nobody believed her, the girl went to search by herself and found the icon, which then was brought to the cathedral and caused several miracles in the following years. The Kazanskaya type derived from this popular icon.

deutsch Russland 19. Jh. Eitempera über Leinen, Kreide- und Goldgrund auf Holz. Brustbildnis der Gottesmutter nach dem Typus von Kasan mit zum Christuskind geneigtem Kopf, welches frontal stehend die Hand zum Segensgestus erhebt. Altersspuren, Farbfehlstellen. Beide Rückseitensponki fehlen.

Nach einer Legende erschien die Gottesmutter im Jahre 1579 in Kasan mehrmals einem Mädchen im Traum und beauftragte sie, öffentlich zu verkünden, wo ihre wundertätige Ikone vergraben sei. Als dem Mädchen niemand glaubte, grub es selbst an der Stelle und fand die Ikone, welche in die Kathedrale gebracht wurde und in den folgenden Jahren etliche Wunder bewirkte. Nach dieser berühmten Ikone entstand der Bildtypus der Kasanskaja.
