Imposing figure of Garuda. South India late 17th C. Bronze, patinated in polychrome colours and partially gilt. Metal stand.
In the Indian mythology the Garuda is a large mythical bird-like creature, half human half eagle, and the mount of Lord Vishnu. It appears also in the Asian mythology as a messenger of gods, bringing information and instructions to the men on earth. The figure is probably originating from a South Indian temple.

Südindien Ende 17. Jh. Bronze, polychrom patiniert und partiell vergoldet. Adlergesichtige, reich geschmückte Gottheit, in ansatzweise hinkniender Bewegung mit nach vorn ausgerichteten Armen.

Der Garuda ist in der indischen Mythologie ein schlangentötendes halb mensch-, halb adlergestaltiges Reittier des Vishnu. In der asiatischen Mytholigie hat der Garuda zugleich die Bedeutung eines Götterboten, der den Menschen Nachrichten und Anweisungen der Götter überbringt. Die Figur stammt wohl ursprünglich aus einem südindischen Tempel.
