«Veduta della gran Piazza e Basilica di S. Pietro». 1772. Etching. Signed lower right in the plate. Titled and inscribed lower middle. Numbered upper right «688» and «4». With a wide margin (creased left and right in the frame) and the usual central vertical fold (with tears at the upper and lower edges).

Sheet 4 of the series «Vedute di Roma».
The first sheets of the 134 vedute in the series «Vedute di Roma» got published in the year 1751. Piranesi stages the shown monuments by using a dynamic perspective and exaggerated dimensions. Thus, the buildings jutting out behind the tiny staffage figures appear great and mighty by means of their richness of detail and a strong light-dark contrast.
