«India has been a great dream of mine since my childhood. A faraway world, mythical, a fable world. [...] For a series of extremely complicated and almost unexpected reasons, we found ourselves, my wife and I, in India, in Bombay, alone and with plenty of time. [...] After many days eventually the Dhobi Ghat: the great, immense washhouses were there, as if they were expecting me at the very moment I happened to be leaning over their stone parapet.
