Clarenbach, Max
1880 Neuss - 1952 Köln.
Around 1920. Winter at the old Rhine waterbody near Wittlaer.
Oil on canvas. Signed lower right.
H 61,
Max Clarenbach loved to study the weather and the resulting atmosphere. Above all, he immortalizes storm and winter landscapes in his paintings. Due to his affection for the landscape between Kaiserswerth and Bockum, the Lower Rhine in particular was a main focus of his work. He painted in the style of the Barbizon school, that believed in a direct approach to nature as the starting point for landscape painting rather than the use of a uniform aesthetic. Max Clarenbach's style has both impressionist and decorative aspects.
