Saint Sebastian as a soldier
Probably South Germany
H 140,
Saint Sebastian, patron saint of archers and athletes, is not shown wearing a loincloth, as is often the case, but rather as a warrior in antiquated Renaissance clothing. Sebastian was a soldier in the elite Roman troop of the Praetorians that formed the emperor's bodyguard. However, when he publicly professed his Christian faith, he was sentenced to death by Emperor Diocletian (284 - 305 AD) and shot by archers. According to legend, Sebastian survived and was eventually publicly beaten to death with clubs.
