Thangka of the Buddha Amitabha
Tibet circa 1800. Gouache on fabric, mounted on textile support. In the centre, on the lotus throne, the crowned Buddha in padmasana, hands in dhyana mudra, holding a vessel. On the lower left side, the three-headed, multi-armed White Tara is depicted as Ushnishavijaya. At the top of the picture, three Buddhist scholars, including the founder of the Gelug school, Tsongkapa Losangdrapa.

The detailed depiction with its numerous fine lotus blossoms, filigree jewellery elements and even golden dragons on Buddha's robe, also captivates with its bright colours.
The Gelug School is an important denomination of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded at the beginning of the 15th century.
