Landaluze, Víctor Patricio de attr.
1828 Bilbao - 1889 Havanna.
Rococo nobleman dressed in dove blue apparel, his thoughts absorbed in reading.
Oil on canvas, relined. Signed lower left, dated «Octubre (18)76» and inscribed «J Ortiz».
H 33,
It can be assumed that the name «J Ortiz» is the name of an actor who was captured in this work by the Spanish-born painter Víctor Patricio de Landaluze, who emigrated to Cuba in the 1850s. One might imagine that the portrayed performer, although already fully absorbed in his role in terms of his costume, has taken a seat on a baroque armchair in a casual posture before his performance in order to study his part.
We would like to thank Mrs Delia María López Campistrous MSc, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, for the kind remarks via
