Conrad Westpfahl in his informal work phase, at the threshold of which he is standing in this painting, creates landscape references by depicting natural forms as they would be seen under a microscope. For example, cellular, tissue-like and amorphous organic structures can be discerned in his works. He refrains from using green tones for the most part, which make the association with nature too obvious, and prefers to use reds and blues. The Blaue Reiter already had red standing for the material, earthly and blue for the immaterial, spiritual.
