Karl Hauptmann

«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.

In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.

In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.

Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.

On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Union of Radha and Krishna
East or South India late 19th C. Pigments and gold on strong paper. Verso a printed, handwritten filled in register of transported goods probably by the East Indian Railway Company. Verso on the back board numbered «VIII». Isolated small stains.
H 40,4, W 30,4 cm (sheet). Framed.
Here, the eternal lovers Radha and Krishna are shown in acrobatic pose, in a sensual union, surrounded by a blooming, spring-like garden. The Gitagovinda, a poem in twelve songs in Sanskrit about the relationship of the two divine lovers, was repeatedly adapted in Indian miniature painting and may also have served as inspiration for the present work.

Ost- oder Südindien Ende 19. Jh. Pigmentfarben und Gold auf festem Papier. Verso ein handschriftlich ausgefülltes, gedrucktes Register für beförderte Waren wohl der East Indian Railway Company. Verso auf der Rahmenrückwand «VIII» num. Vereinzelt kl. Flecken.
H. 40,4, B. 30,4 cm (Blattgröße). Gerahmt.
In akrobatischer Pose verschlungen sieht man hier das ewige Liebespaar Radha und Krishna in sinnlicher Vereinigung, umgeben von einem blühenden, frühlingshaften Garten. Das Gitagovinda, ein Gedicht in zwölf Gesängen auf Sanskrit über die Beziehung der beiden göttlichen Liebenden, wurde immer wieder in der indischen Miniaturmalerei rezipiert und könnte auch für das vorliegende Werk als Inspiration gedient haben.
