«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947
Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.
In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.
In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.
Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.
On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Unique work from the series PS (Prinzip Seriell (principle serial imagery)). A series of nine models (1 - 9), each with four variations (a - d).
«Ludwig Wilding's so-called Laufobjekte differ from pictures with geometric and coloured constructions in the field of perceptual art, optical art, externally by the superimposition of linear structures which are assembled through two spaced layers. The front transparent surface is the carrier of a periodic linear structure; the rear surface, on the other hand, is a compositionally interrupted system of circles, concentric or in a row, of squares, rectangles and stripes, grids of lines with different angles of inclination.» from: Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf (Ed.), Prinzip Seriell, Lauf Objekte, Düsseldorf 1971.
The model PS 7 is characterized by squares with vertically directed parallels on a vertical parallel grid. Variation b contains 16 squares arranged at 9° or 171° angles on the rear surface.

«Die sogenannten Laufobjekte von Ludwig Wilding unterscheiden sich von Bildern mit geometrischen und farbigen Konstruktionen im Bereich der wahrnehmungsbezogenen Kunst, der optical art, äußerlich dadurch, daß die Überlagerung linearer Strukturen hier durch zwei abständige Ebenen erfolgt. Dabei ist die vordere durchsichtige Fläche Träger einer periodischen linearen Struktur; auf der hinteren Fläche hingegen ist ein als Komposition unterbrochenes System angebracht von Kreisformen, konzentrisch oder gereiht, von Quadraten, Rechtecken und Streifen, Linienrastern von unterschiedlichem Neigungswinkel.» aus: Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf (Hrsg.), Prinzip Seriell, Lauf Objekte, Düsseldorf 1971.
Das Modell PS 7 zeichnet sich durch Quadrate mit vertikal gerichteten Parallelen auf einem senkrechten Parallelraster aus. Die Variation b enthält 16 Quadrate, die in 9° bzw. 171° Winkel auf der hinteren Fläche angebracht sind.
