«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947
Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.
In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.
In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.
Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.
On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

1839 Bernau - 1924 Karlsruhe.
«Am Rhein bei Säckingen (the Rhine near Säckingen)». Oil on canvas. Monogrammed lower left and dated (18)81. Verso inscribed «Rheinufer», as well as illegibly inscribed and stamped on the stretcher. Restored.
Enclosed a letter from Dr. Werner Zimmermann, Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, dated 1984, with a short description of the work and an evaluation of the painting's insurance value, as well as correspondence regarding the exhibition in Bad Säckingen.
In a handwritten letter, dated April 1906, Hans Thoma refers to the present painting while replying to a request regarding the reproduction rights of several of his artworks. This letter, relating directly to the city view shown here, will be called up for auction as lot 3345.

Anbei ein Schreiben von Dr. Werner Zimmermann, Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, aus dem Jahr 1984 mit einer kurzen Beschreibung und einer Einschätzung des Versicherungswertes des Werkes sowie Korrespondenz zur Ausstellung in Bad Säckingen.
Hans Thoma erwähnt das hier vorliegende Gemälde in einem handschriftlichen Schreiben vom April 1906, eine Anfrage nach den Reproduktionsrechten verschiedener Werke beantwortend: «Sehr geehrter Herr! Gerne gestatte ich Ihnen die Aufnahme der gewünschten Bilder für Ihre Arbeit. - vom Flötenbläser in Frühlingslandschaft sind die Reproduktionsrechte noch nicht vergeben - hingegen hat vom Rhein bei Säckingen das Werbungsrecht die Firma Bruckmann in München und wäre dort Anfragen nötig. - Hochachtungsvoll ergebenst Hans Thoma». Dieser, in direktem Bezug zu der hier gezeigten Stadtansicht stehende Brief kommt unter der Kat.Nr. 3345 zum Aufruf.
