Karl Hauptmann

«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.

In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.

In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.

Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.

On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Iron chest with shackle locks
Germany circa 1700. Iron, painted in polychrome colours. Cuboid iron chest with all-round crossed iron bands and two lateral side handles. Covered and functional top lock with 14 latch bolts, five at the front and at the back, and two on each side. Decorative lock and two shackle locks on the front. Set-up bolt for the lid. Original locks and fittings as well as two original shackle locks. Green paint presumably added later. Good age-related condition.
H 44, W 86,5, D 46,5 cm.
Two original keys.
Provenance: purchased at Antiquitäten Johann Numberger, Frankfurt a.M., in 1973; since then private collection Lower Saxony.

deutsch Eisentruhe mit zwei Bügelschlössern
Deutsch um 1700. Eisen, polychrom gefasst. Quaderförmige Eisentruhe mit umlaufenden, über Kreuz vernieteten Bandeisen und zwei seitlichen Tragegriffen. Im Deckel funktionstüchtiges Schloss mit Abdeckung und 14 Fallen, je fünf vorne und hinten sowie je zwei seitlich. Zierschloss und zwei Fallriegel mit Bügelschlössern an der Frontseite. Aufstellbolzen für den Deckel. Originalschlösser und -beschläge sowie zwei Originalbügelschlösser. Grüne Fassung wohl später. Guter, altersbedingter Zustand.
H. 44, B. 86,5, T. 46,5 cm.
Zwei Originalschlüssel.
Provenienz: erworben 1973 bei Antiquitäten Johann Numberger, Frankfurt a.M.; seitdem Privatsammlung Niedersachsen.
