«The Feldberg Painter»

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.
In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.
In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.
Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.
On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Brecht, George und Robert Filliou

«La Cedille Qui Sourit». 1969. Assemblage, consisting of a slip case cardboard box mimicking an oversized matchbox and containing a standard sized one filled with four hook screws, also included are die-cut cards, leaflets, a text by curator Johannes Cladders and loose pages. Typographically inscribed with the artist's names, as well as with the exhibition's data on the title page of the document-collection. Verso numbered «0201» on the last page. All pages with text in German, English and French. Box stabilised.
In 1965, the Fluxus artists George Brecht and Robert Filliou opened a small shop called «La Cedille Qui Sourit» in Villefranche-sur-Mer, which has been a creative workspace and drop-in centre for friends and artists of the Fluxus movement. Amongst others they offered works and editions by Ben Vautier, George Maciunas and Daniel Spoerri. Short after they closed their shop the artists were invited to exhibit at the Städtisches Museum in Mönchengladbach. The present work, published in an edition of 440 numbered examples, accompanied the exhibition, which ran from June 18th to July 27th 1969.

Assemblage, bestehend aus der überdimensionierten Imitation einer Streichholzschachtel, einer innenliegenden Streichholzschachtel üblicher Größe befüllt mit vier metallenen Wandhaken sowie einem Konvolut links oben passend zur Streichholzschachtel ausgestanzter bedruckter Karten, Broschüren, dem Text des Ausstellungskurators Johannes Cladders und loser Seiten. Auf dem Deckblatt des Konvolutes an Schriftstücken typographisch bez. mit den Namen der Künstler sowie den Ausstellungsdaten. Verso auf der letzten Seite «0201» num. Alle Seiten typographisch beschriftet in Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch. Schachtel geklebt.

Die Fluxus-Künstler George Brecht und Robert Filliou eröffneten 1965 in Villefranche-sur-Mer einen kleinen Laden mit dem Namen «La Cedille Qui Sourit», der
