Professor Hermann Dischler

Hermann Dischler was born on the 25th of September in 1866 in Freiburg i.Br. He received his artistic training in the art school in Karlsruhe, he was student of Gustav Schönleber. Thereafter he was engaged as a painter in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald area.
1894, after he finished his studies, he built himself an artist’s workroom in Freiburg i.Br. At this time he went on a lot of trips and his trusty camera followed him everywhere. Five years later he started to number and comment his artworks, which he collected in 29 «Bildbüchern (books of pictures)».
In the winter months from 1905 to 1907 he stayed in the Todtnauer Hütte, where a lot of his oil studies arise.
The snowy winter landscapes became his typical theme and he called himself «Schneemoler (snowpainter)». 1917 he received his professorship by Grand Duke Friedrich II.
In 1927 he had an exhibition with artists like Curt Liebich, Julius Heffner, Wilhelm Nagel, Wilhelm Wickertsheimer a.o., they called themselves «Die Schwarzwälder (the Black Forests)». He died on the 20th of March in 1935 in Hinterzarten. Today his works are extremely appreciated because the snowy landscape present the untouched nature.

Parlour table, so-called bureau plat in André-Charles Boulle style
France circa 1890. Oak, tortoiseshell and ebony, veneered, brass, and fire-gilt bronze. Four curved square legs with bronze sabots in form of paw-and-acanthus feet, wavy curved apron with three drawers and three glare drawers, top with a profiled brass bordure. Fittings of gilt bronze in the form of espagnolettes, bearded masks, volute-shaped cartouches as well as handles, satyr masks at the corners of the plate. Fine engraved brass and tortoiseshell marquetery. Original locks and fittings. Age-related unrestored condition. Veneer partially missing. Leather writing surface missing.

André-Charles Boulle (1642 - 1732), the most renowned cabinetmaker of his time, adopted the technique of marquetry and brought it to the highest level of perfection. This technique was originally widespread in Italy and the Netherlands and used a wide variety of materials such as brass, tortoiseshell and ivory. The characteristics of his style, such as the symmetrically monumental arrangement of architectural elements, and above all the finely crafted fittings in chased bronze, were the basis for his enormous success, culminating in his appointment as cabinetmaker to the King Louis XIV of France. His work at the court of the Sun King gave him artistic freedom and technical possibilities that were impossible in the world of craftsmanship, which was regulated by strict guild orders. To this day, the furniture in the «Boulle technique» is famous throughout the world as the epitome of refined lifestyle and sophisticated elegance.
Provenance: private possession advocate and notary Dr. Herbert Geisler, Dresden and Stuttgart; in 1973 by donating passed into the possession of Diane Oehmichen, princess of Bourbon-Parma, and her son Alexander Oehmichen, Bad Krozingen; in 2020 by succession fully transferred to Alexander Oehmichen.

Frankreich um 1890. Eiche, Schildpatt und Ebenholz, furniert, Messing, und Bronze, feuervergoldet. Vier geschweifte Vierkantbeine mit Bronzesabots in Form von Tatzen und Akanthusblättern, wellig ausgeschnittene, dreischübige Zarge mit Blendschüben an der Rückseite, in profiliertem Messingstab gefasstes Deckblatt. Beschläge aus vergoldeter Bronze in Form von Espagnoletten und bärtigen Masken, volutenartig geformte Kartuschen sowie Handhaben und die Ecken der Platte schmückende Satyrmasken. Fein gravierte Messing- und Schildpatteinlagen. Originalschlösser und -beschläge. Altersbedingter, unrest. Zustand. Furnierschäden. Lederschreibeinlage fehlt.

André-Charles Boulle (1642 - 1732), der renommierteste Ebenist und Kunstschreiner seiner Zeit, übernahm die Technik einer ursprünglich in Italien und den Niederlanden verbreiteten Einlegearbeit, die aus unterschiedlichsten Materialien wie Messing, Schildpatt und Elfenbein bestand, und führte sie zur höchsten Vollendung. Die Wesenszüge seines Stils, wie die symmetrisch monumentale Anordnung architektonischer Elemente, und vor allem die fein gearbeiteten Beschläge aus ziselierter Bronze begründeten seinen enormen Erfolg, der in der Ernennung zum Ebenisten des französischen Königs Ludwig XIV. gipfelte. Die Arbeit am Hof des Sonnenkönigs erlaubte ihm künstlerische Freiräume und bot ihm technische Möglichkeiten, die ihm außerhalb, in der von strengen Zunftordnungen reglementierten Welt des Handwerks, verwehrt blieben. Bis heute sind Möbel in «Boulle-Technik» in aller Welt als Inbegriff raffinierter Lebensart und mondäner Eleganz berühmt.
Provenienz: Privatbesitz Rechtsanwalt und Notar Dr. Herbert Geisler, Dresden und Stuttgart; durch Schenkung 1973 übergegangen in den Besitz von Diane Oehmichen, Prinzessin von Bourbon-Parma, und deren Sohn Alexander Oehmichen, Bad Krozingen; 2020 durch Erbfolge vollständig übergegangen an Alexander Oehmichen.
