«The Feldberg Painter»

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.
In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.
In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.
Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.
On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Reichmann, Georg Friedrich
1798 Münden - 1853 Hannover.
«Das Eierlieschen». Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Verso on the stretcher two old labels of Fideikommiss-Gallery, Hanover, with indication of inventory numbers, an old label of Cumberlandsche Gallery, Hanover, thereon numbered «202», as well as the seal of the Royal House of Hanover. Verso on the canvas numbered «94» on an old printed label. Restored.
Portrait of Augusta Karoline of Cambridge (1822 - 1916), Princess of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover. Reichmann was working for the Royal House of Hanover and painted Augusta already as a child, circa 1828. Thereby he dressed her in a similar bourgeois and Biedermeier-like manner to the present painting.

Porträt der Augusta Karoline von Cambridge (1822 - 1916), Prinzessin von Großbritannien, Irland und Hannover. Reichmann arbeitete im Auftrag des Königshauses von Hannover und porträtierte Augusta bereits um 1828 im zarten Kindesalter. Dabei kleidete er sie in ähnlicher biedermeierlich-bürgerlicher Weise wie in hier gezeigtem Gemälde.
