Karl Hauptmann

«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.

In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.

In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.

Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.

On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

Guggenbichler, Johann Meinrad Werkstatt
1649 Einsiedeln - 1723 Mondsee.
Studio of Johann Meinrad Guggenbichler. Saint Florian. Carved lime wood with hollowed back side, painted in polychrome colours, gilt and silvered. The patron saint of the fire brigade standing on a grass plinth, dressed in Roman armour, holding his attributes, a water bucket and a lance with a banner on which a burning house can be seen. Signs of age. Banner and bucket later.
H 97,5, W 42 cm.
Meinrad Guggenbichler is one of Austria's great baroque sculptors. After his years of travel he settled down in Mondsee in 1675 where he worked on behalf of the monastery and established his own sculptor workshop. His early work is closely linked to the Alpine wood carving tradition of Thomas Schwanthaler.

Heiliger Florian. Lindenholz, halbrund geschnitzt und rückseitig gehöhlt, polychrom gefasst, vergoldet und versilbert. Der Schutzpatron der Feuerwehr, auf einer Rasenplinthe stehend und in römischer Rüstung gekleidet, hält seine Attribute, den Löscheimer sowie eine Lanze mit einer Fahne, auf der ein brennendes Haus zu sehen ist. Altersspuren. Fahne und Eimer später erg.

Meinrad Guggenbichler zählt zu den großen Barockbildhauern Österreichs. Nach seinen Wanderjahren trat er 1675 in den Dienst des Stifts Mondsee, wo er später eine Bildhauerwerkstatt eröffnete. Sein Frühwerk ist eng mit der alpenländischen Schnitztradition Thomas Schwanthalers verbunden.
