Karl Hauptmann

«The Feldberg Painter»
24th April 1880 – 7th April 1947

Karl Hauptmann was born on 25th of April in 1880 in Freiburg i.Br., Germany. He received his artistic training in Nürnberg and Munich and was thereafter engaged as a decorative painter.

In 1908 he produced the first of what were to be his typical Black Forest paintings. In the years between 1915 and 1919, he produced numerous images of the Alpine region he had visited during his deployment with the mountain infantry in the First World War.

In 1918 Karl Hauptmann purchased «Molerhüsli», which for him encompassed his dwelling, atelier, and exhibition space. It soon became a favourite meeting place for skiers, hikers, students, and visitors to Feldberg.

Due to Hauptmann’s ever-present health problems, his doctor prescribed a trip to Italy in 1940, to which he again travelled the following year.

On 7th of April in 1947, Karl Hauptmann died at the age of 67 at his «Molerhüsli».

1933 Stuttgart - 1999 Ibiza.
Monkey & horse. Five drawings probably for a campaign of Verkehrsverbund Stuttgart. Circa 1980. Ink, watercolour and felt-tip pen on Schoellershammer (dry stamp), mounted on backing cardboard. Unsigned. Each numbered upper left respectively upper right «2» to «6», two of them inscribed «Kontern» lower left. Minor stains, minor traces of mounting.
H 18,2, W 21,9, 22,1 respectively. 22,3 cm (sheet). Unframed.
The two cult figures monkey & horse were created in 1959 by the film producer Armin Lang, one of the illustrators was Otto Benz.

Äffle & Pferdle. Fünf Zeichnungen wohl für eine Kampagne des Verkehrsverbundes Stuttgart. Um 1980. Tusche, Aquarell und Filzstift auf Schoellershammer (Trockenstempel), auf Unterlagekarton kaschiert. Unsign. Jeweils o.l. bzw. o.r. num. «2» bis «6», davon zwei u.l. bez. «Kontern». Leicht fleckig, min. Montierungsspuren.
H. 18,2, B. 21,9, 22,1 bzw. 22,3 cm (Blattgröße). Ungerahmt.
Die beiden Kultfiguren Äffle & Pferdle wurden 1959 vom Filmproduzenten Armin Lang entwickelt; einer der Zeichner war Otto Benz.
