The peasant with the hoe belongs to a group of works depicting workers and peasants from 1894. Known as a sculptor of the Third Republic with the monumental open-air sculpture «The Triumph of the Republic» at the Place de la Nation in Paris, Dalou here rather shows his sympathy with the workers' movement, which was to cumulate in his last unfinished work, the «Monument to the Workers». The farmer with hoe was cast at Susse as from 1910.
