Watercolour over pencil on strong paper. Signed lower left and dated 1844. Verso on the backboard an excerpt from the exhibition catalogue mentioned below with the work's data.

Receiving his first major commission in 1834, Jacques Guiaud here for designed seven historical scenes for the Empire Rooms of the Palace of Versailles. He undertook numerous journeys, including a major trip to Italy, but stays in Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Denmark also left their mark on the artist. All throughout France his works can be found, notably at the Musée Carnavalet, which has seven of his paintings depicting scenes from the Siege of Paris.
